fifteen things to keep in mind when Visiting  colosseum

Duration required

Visitors take 60 to 90 minutes to explore Colosseum’s 1st and 2nd floors, the arena, and the underground. And one more hour to explore Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on the same day.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Colosseum is when they open at 8.30 am. If you can’t make it in the morning, be at the Colosseum by 3 pm – after tour groups have left.

Timed tickets

As a rule, only 3000 tourists can be inside the Colosseum anytime. So select a time and date while booking the tickets and be at the attraction within 15 minutes of the time mentioned.

Night timings

Colosseum night tours are available from April till the end of the year. The night tours start an hour after the regular closing time of the Colosseum. These night tours usually last 1 to 2 hours.

Bring water

No food or drink vendors are inside the Colosseum, so bring water and snacks to refuel yourself.

Wear comfortable shoes

There are stairs and uneven areas, and much walking is required, so wear comfortable shoes for a better experience.

Beat the heat

We recommend wearing light clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to beat the heat during the hot summer months.

Avoid larger bags

Visitors cannot enter the monument with large bags, suitcases, or backpacks. So, bring small and medium-sized bag to the attraction.

Photography

Photography is allowed at the Colosseum. Bring a camera or smartphone to capture portraits and amazing photos of the iconic site.

Free Entry

The Colosseum is free for visitors on the first Sunday of every month. We don’t recommend this because the queues are long, and you can’t book group tours, guided tours, or online tickets.

Standard tickets

This ticket lets you access Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. It allows you to explore its first and second floors but doesn’t get you access to the Arena Floor.

Arena Floor

This ticket lets you access Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and arena floor. You get in through the ‘visitors with reservations’ priority entrance, thus saving much waiting time.

Guided tour

This 3-hour tour ticket helps to skip the lines and join a fascinating guided tour of Colosseum and Roman Forum. There are 3 tours daily – starting at 9 am, 11.30 am, and 3 pm.
