Duration required

If you visit with kids, exploring Austin Zoo will take three hours. However, you will need 90 minutes to quickly run through everything at Austin Zoo. Some spend up to five hours with regular breaks.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Austin Zoo is when they open at 9.30 am. We recommend weekdays for a peaceful visit because it gets crowded on weekends and school holidays.

Rawhide Rocket

Austin Zoo’s train Rawhide Rocket offers a scenic 20-minute ride through the hill country. Visitors can also see some of the zoo’s off-display animals, such as Emus, Alpacas, Longhorns, etc.

Train timings

The train departs the depot at the top of every hour starting at 11 am and runs till 3 pm during the school days. The train continues its trips till 5 pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Dairy Barn

The Dairy Barn has farm animals such as Boer goats, Nigerian dwarf goats, pigs, pygmy goats, sheep, etc. Guests can buy food from the Gift Shop and feed the farm animals.

Comfortable shoes

You will be walking and standing on trails made of crushed granite gravel for a few hours, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes for a better experience.

Bring Water

Austin Zoo does not have water fountains, but you can buy bottled Rainwater from the Gift Shop. Or bring your drinks to stay hydrated.

Restaurants

Austin Zoo doesn’t have sit-in restaurants. However, guests can purchase snacks and drinks in the Gift Shop or vending machines available at most locations.

Book in advance

Booking Austin Zoo tickets online in advance is cheaper and saves time and energy by skipping the lines at the ticket counter and last-minute disappointment.

Entry tickets

The admission ticket to Austin Zoo includes access to all animal exhibits and the train ride. However, some additional activities have extra fees.
