If you are an avid traveler or not, it is good to know the important things travel insurance does not cover.
The most important thing to know is that when you travel – domestic or international – always get a travel insurance. Travel insurance is best protection against fate, especially needed when you are out of your comfort zone and far away from your near and dear ones.
I personally like to know what kind of protection I will be getting before I sign the insurance documents and start paying for that “protection against the unforeseen and unpredictable”. I strongly think you should also know what your travel insurance covers and what your travel insurance doesn’t cover.
Don’t worry and don’t panic yet. You are not the only one who isn’t aware of what doesn’t get covered by their travel insurance company.
Every year many travelers go to different corners of the world relying on their travel insurance company to take care of them when things go wrong. However most of these travelers don’t know that even the best travel insurance policies do not cover every possible situation and incident.
It’s better to get all the awareness about the important things your travel insurance does not cover.
Things travel insurance doesn’t cover
1. Domestic Travel
Before buying a travel insurance policy, be sure to understand what benefits you will get while traveling in your home country because certain core benefits are not applicable when your travel type is domestic.
This includes medical insurance coverage as well. Though there are few travel insurance policies which will give you the benefits of medical coverage when you are traveling over 100 miles away from home, most don’t.
Most of the travel insurance plans cover your medical costs only when you are traveling abroad. This is the most important thing which your travel insurance does not cover.
Pollution is a major issue in current time and day and it is creating lot of issues in our day-to-day life. Many central Asian cities like Beijing and New Delhi are notorious for their brown skies caused by pollution and these polluted cities are such a major concern for travelers that some even cancel their trips.
If you end up cancelling your trip due to too much pollution in the city of travel, that’s one important thing not covered in your insurance policy. You won’t get your money back.
Of course, due to this pollution, if you get admitted in the hospital your medical insurance will kick in and you will be taken care of.
3. Extreme Sports
We all plan trips for various reasons. They could be anything – for honeymoon, for a quiet time with family, for a hike across the wilderness or for some dangerous, adrenalin pumping action.
If you are an adventurous person and want to try every sort of sports no matter how risky these are, be careful. This is one of the important things not covered by your travel insurance.
Losses incurred while you were participating in such sports don’t mean anything for your insurance company.
Of course, if you are willing to pay higher premiums and buy travel insurance policies created especially for adventurous people like yourself then you are covered.
4. Pre-existing conditions
Pre-existing condition is something /anything which has happened before you bought the travel insurance policy. If you have health issues and due to that you face losses during the trip then before claiming for the coverage make sure that condition started during the trip and not before.
If it had started before the trip it means it was a known fact and travel insurance does not cover for such losses.
Many of us have had to cancel our well-laid plans due to unforeseeable conditions. Unfortunately, cancellation of trips are major concern for most travelers and yet trip cancellation coverage is quite complicated. The reason why you are cancelling becomes the most important factor here. If it ends up being one of the ‘covered reasons for trip cancellations’, you will get your money back.
Other than above reasons there are still many situations that travel insurance does not cover. Following are the list of such losses or situations which does not get covered in most travel insurance plans:
1. Losses due to war, military actions, civil disorder and riots don’t cover by travel insurance.
4. If lousy weather conditions spoil your trip, your travel insurance plan doesn’t cover it.
5. If you are traveling abroad for treatment or purpose of your traveling is to obtain medical treatment then its travel cost doesn’t get covered by travel insurance.
7. Losses due to venereal disease such as AIDS virus doesn’t cover by travel insurance.
8. Any losses which incurred while the insured is involved in unlawful or any criminal activity doesn’t get covered by any travel insurance.
